Ramadan 2009 (The Holy Month)

Surah Al Hojooraat

The title of this Surah has been selected from Verse 4. This Surah was revealed to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) in Madina Shareef.

Allah (S.W.T) has prescribed for the Muslim Ummah an Islamic social system for their best domestic life. The family sanctity and the establishment of pious society by social control laws should be maintained forever to keep the people pious and righteous. Surah Hojooraat provides the instructions to maintain each one’s privacy in his/her personal family.

The word Hojooraat is the plural of Hojra. It means the separated apartment to exclusively live with own family. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W) lived a profound and best family life, which is a perfect model for His followers. The sanctity of His (S.A.W) privacy and His best family chastity was to be preserved.

His Companions (R.A), with great love and sincerity, kept constant contact to learn every bit of His (S.A.W)’s practices. In order to learn more about the beautiful religion, the Sahabas (R.A), started constantly coming to His (S.A.W)’s apartment. Therefore, this Surah prescribed the restrictions to upkeep His (S.A.W)’s family privacy. The family life and domestic routines of the Muslims should have similar privacy to maintain family chastity as has been prescribed in the Holy Quran.

Surah Hojooraat provides community life structure of the Muslims with respect to the family life and personal privacy for peaceful co-existence of the Muslims as brothers, with utmost respect to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W).

Hazrete Aisha (R.A) was once asked, “How did the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) spends His (S.A.W) time at home? The Mother of Believers (R.A) replied “He (S.A.W) used to keep himself busy serving His family and when it was time for the Prayer, He (S.A.W) would get up for the Prayer” (Bukhari Shareef)
